z-depth offset without scaling the object

feel totally noob on my question, please be patient.

i have a wall with images, each layer need to be placed randomly in z-space without affecting the "scale" of the layer.
is there an expression that allows the camera watching at the plane layers but revealing z-depth of layers first when camera starts rotating around the objects/image wall?

don't know if this sounds too crazy in terms of physical possibiliites.

Thank you all for sharing all your ideas and knowledge here!

Thomas
