fit-to-frame pics of diff sizes and aspect ratios

I'm trying to do a wedding slideshow for my cousin. I have a bunch of images of different sizes and proportions... some are portrait, some are landscape, and a lot are not 4:3... it would be really cool if i could tell AE to take every image and scale so that it's either letterboxed or cropped (D1 extraction)..
Ideally you would have two options of either cropped or letterboxed.
I guess you'd subtract the width from the height to see if the image was portrait or landscape, and then A) scale the longer dimension to 100% of the corresponding comp dimension (for crop), or B) scale the shorter dimension to 100% of the same comp dimension (for letterbox).
thanks..
