I know this isn't really the right place, but

Does anyone know of a way to externally edit a .aep file.

CS6 crashes on open if a project has Auto Levels. I'm trying to remove it, with an external editor to hopefully open the project.

Maybe it would be possible to change the .aep to a CS5.5, externally edited, and open it that way.

Any thoughts?

I don't know about externally editing it, but have you tried to open it with Caps Lock on and have you tried to import it into a new project instead of opening it? If you know it's Auto Levels then you could try removing the plugin from the Plug-ins folder before opening it or importing it.

Problem solved!

I removed the plugin from AE so it shows as missing instead of crashing.
