Does anyone the AE process or what type of expressions were used to create this great piece

My first guess would be MoGraph using Cinema 4D.

Not really too much expressions, I'd say. Perhaps some "follow the leader" stuff as on Dan Ebberts' website to get delayed animation, but mostly classical keyframing.
