Custom Effects / PresetEffects.xml Question

This is a question for nab or others who know the PresetEffects.xml / "pseudo-effects/custom-effects" workflow, continuing from the other post on here:
I notice in the PresetEffects.xml file there is a control type defined called "Popup" where you could define preset string variables to be selected; but it doesn't seem to be used in any of Adobe's owen pseudo-effects. I tried to implement it but obviously got the syntax wrong because then I couldn't invoke any of my pseudo effects, which seems to be a symptom of bad XML in the file. If I take away that line everything works again.
Anyone managed to make this work? I was surprised to find it there as it's not one of the normal Expression Controls but it would be very useful to have it.
