Script to replace PSD Layered file!!!

For some strange reason After Effects does not have the functionality to replace a PSD layered file. (ie: right click, replace footage)

I'm in desperate need of a script which can do this.

My setup is such that I have several PSD's each one contains the exact number of layers with the exact naming convention for each layer. Only the PSD file name itself is unique.

I understand it would be simple to overwrite the original PSD, reopen After Effects, then save as a new file.... but unfortunately, I need to keep the
original file as well.. This method would simply give me two AE projects pointing to the same PSD file.

My only goal is to simply replace the original path/file name

Can this be done?

Thanks for any help

Jeff

What AE version ?
In CS4 there's Export XML feature so that you could save in XML file ad edit with a text editor. ;)

If you are running CS4 you can use my Batch Search and Replace Paths script: http://aescripts.com/batch-search-n-replace-paths/
