Need some help with some scripting

Hi Gang,

Well, I'm no scripter! I really enjoy using scripts, but just have the most difficult time writing them. I basically can't write them, I kinda take pieces from other scripts and patch together what I want a script to do, and try to work on it until it works. Not the best way...

But I have some simple repetitive tasks I'd love to have a script for, and I'm pretty sure it's super easy, and I guess I'm kinda hoping maybe one of you guys could crank it out in like ten minutes.
I would be enternally grateful!!

Here's what I'm hoping to do:

1) - I would have a project open with one piece of footage in the project bin, a piece of DV footage.

2) - You would select the footage item and run the script.

3) - The script would check the footage and see if it's Lower field first or Upper, then import the same footage again and set Upper or Lower to the opposite of what the first footage is. It would also change the label color to indicate it's different.

4) - It would create a comp of the footage, the equivilent of dragging the first piece of footage to the Comp button on the project window.

5) - It would then put the second piece of footage (with the opposite field order) on top, and set the opacity to 50%.

6) - It would then put an adjustment layer on the very top, with a Sharpen effect set to 15.

Does this sound easy? If not, can anyone give me some pointers on what parts of this will be easy or difficult?

Sean

Do you want we write it for you or do you prefer some guidance only ?
Does this sound easy?
To answer ...

3) easy for the interpretation but you can't change the label color (but you could rename approriately the footage items and/or leave a comment "upper" ,"lower")

4) easy

5) easy

6) easy

Good luck !

i guess i'll try to get it together, but if i can't get it in a few days, i'd love it if someone could write it. that way, i'll at least know where i went wrong, if i try first.

really - it's easy to bring in footage? i thought that would be hard, i haven't seen a reference to importing footage anywhere in any script. and leaving a comment would be perfect for upper or lower! thanks for that tip!! (how silly to not be able to change label colors through scripting - i would think that would be super easy- shows how much i know about scripting!).

thanks for the tips, hopefully i can piece something together!

The best thing to do is just start writing it and post problems you have as you come across them. Like nab said, what you want isn't too hard, but it's definitely not a 10 min job. The people here are very helpful but normally can't devote time to writing a script for someone unless it's one that is re-usable for multiple users.

There are examples of importing footage in the Scripting Manual. Also check this script: http://www.aenhancers.com/viewtopic.php?t=102

Let us know how it's going and good luck!

thanks, byronnash, for the encouragement and tips. Certainly, if I finish this, I will definitely be posting it here for everyone to use! But I've recently decided that this technique I was trying to automate for improving the quality of miniDV footage might not be the best technique I can think of. I may still finish it, just to get the AE scripting experience! :)
